As I noticed here, RedHat published free fonts which are metrically compatible with Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New. As explained by RedHat these fonts are not completely finished, they have no hinting. What hinting does it makes sure fonts render smoothly onto your screen and keep them legible at small sizes. RedHat has announced that they will release hinted versions of these fonts at a later date. But even then, Liberation Sans en Liberation Serif render just fine at 12pt, this is probably FreeType autohinter at work. Only Liberation Mono renders poorly onscreen at the moment. I made a Ubuntu package, which you can get here.
