The GIMP has a plugin framework, just like almost any other popular image editor. The general problem with plugins is that over time, really good plugins get developed, and really bad plugins get developed. As an end user it’s often hard to tell which is which, without trying them all.

But for Ubuntu users there’s a simpler way. The Ubuntu repositories contain a package called gimp-plugin-registry. This package is a best-of collection of GIMP plugins. It contains amongst others:

  • A black and white film simulator (which actually has real world film presets)
  • Lomography simulator (to emulate Diana/Holga toy camera’s)
  • GREYCstoration (Advanced denoise/photo restauration algorithm)
  • Liquid Rescale (Content-aware resizing)
  • Refocus (Consider this an advanced version of Sharpen)

Try it, you probably won’t be disappointed!
